Everybody Loves Raymond, Ray Romano has won millions of fans who view him as a favorite observer of family life.

The native New Yorker will headline at Carnegie Hall Wednesday, June 9, as the centerpiece of the Toyota Comedy Festival. The 10-day event features a variety of comedians in different settings around New York City.

Is he nervous?

'It's a different kind of nervous,' says Romano. 'They gave me 60 tickets. New York is my hometown. I had to buy 40 more.'

He says his brother, a New York City police sergeant, asked for 30 tickets for his fellow officers.

'My mother is a Juilliard graduate. This is a big thrill for her. She always dreamed of it as a pianist, and I'm going to be up there telling baby-poop jokes.'

To prepare for the gig, Romano plans to polish his standup act at local clubs. Not only does the practice help, but the act itself evolves with the help of audience reaction.

'You don't just sit down and write standup and say what is funny,' Romano explains. 'You go on stage and the audience helps you write it. You have to do it again and againÂ… Now it will be fun to do it again.'

Actor Peter Boyle, who plays Romano's father on the show, missed a couple of episodes this past season after suffering a heart attack on the set in March. He underwent angioplasty. Only a week later, he wanted to go back to work, and Romano says Boyle is fine. 'Now he's going to Knicks games,' he adds.

Romano dislikes the name of his show.
